The village was recently dissolved by a Franklin County court judge because of its pattern of internal corruption and incompetence. It has long been the target of scorn and criticism from Central Ohio residents, state officials, and even national media, becoming known as a notorious speed trap by the 1990s for its corrupt local government as well. New Rome, Ohio New Rome is a village located in Franklin County, Ohio, on the west side of Columbus, where it occupies little more than a three-block stretch of Broad Street (U.S. Highway 40). The 60-resident village had as many as 14 policemen, with the Village Council wanting more. Nearly all of this money was funneled back into the police force, which almost exclusively dealt with traffic violations and so essentially existed to fund itself. All rights reserved.
